Essay Revisions II

“The liberal arts are becoming more relevant than ever before with the increasing amount of technology and automated tasks. Something that is always referenced in the modern day is lack of jobs due the increasing population and decreasing career opportunities because of technology. Many jobs that involve physical labor are being replaced by machines which is making it ever more necessary to earn a liberal arts degree that allows you to develop understandings of varying subjects. In an article by Jeffery Scheuer titled “Critical Thinking and the Liberal Arts”, He focuses on the foundation that a liberl arts degree can build for a person. When talking about why the liberal arts are necessary he says “The overall goal is to foster vibrant and prosperous communities with broad and deep participation, in public conversations marked by fairness, inclusion, and (where critical thinking comes in) intellectual rigor.”. This quote is showing that he feels that in order to be an upstanding member of society a liberal arts degree is the best way to achieve this. Being a college student I feel that this is one of the main reasons I decided to attend college. Several people informed me that this is the place I will learn to not only be an adult be a member of society. In another article written by Sandford J. Ungar titled “7 Major misperceptions about the Liberal Arts”, he says “The method I happen to advocate, for obvious reasons, is the small, residential liberal-arts college, usually independent, where there is close interaction between faculty members and students and, at its best, a sense of community emerges that prepares young people to develop high standards for themselves and others.”. Essentially Ungar feels that a liberal arts education that is taught in a deeply personalized sense offers the best opportunity for a student to discover their need to contribute to society. Clearly considering I attend a school that is considered small compared to other  major colleges, I agree with this statement because I feel that I am receiving a highly personalized learning experience while at UNE. Next in the University of New England CORE Handbook, they explain their reasoning behind the liberal arts focus at the school. “As a whole, the Core Curriculum integrates these values in order to provide students with essential

preparation for responsible caring for the wellbeing of individuals, civil societies, and our shared Planet.”(Page 2 Paragraph 5). In this quote straight from the handbook, they feel that it is their responsibility to supply the student with a responsibility for caring about others, civilization, and the planet. Considering I attend the school I clearly agree with this statement and I think that UNE has an understanding of what the liberal arts should provide.

The problem with this paragraph is that I have too many ideas compressed into one paragraph so my thoughts don’t exactly fit.
